Introduction

ESA IAP has installed so far 9 international ambassador platforms, covering a range of themes from daily life. The new theme of water management is covered by the 'AP Water', the ambassadorship being fulfilled by Het Waterschapshuis. On 16 October 2012, Het Waterschapshuis (HWH) will host the APWater Inaugural Workshop, entitled “Space for Water”. The Workshop will cover the possibilities and need for space-enabled services for responsible water management and related crisis management. It is open for registration until 11 October 2012 (see below).

The workshop will be held at the premises of Het Waterschapshuis in Amersfoort with national and international speakers from the water management community, government, science and industry. Starting from the needs of the government and the water management community, the workshop aims to discuss the potential of existing space assets (Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation and Satellite Communication) to support or enhance water and associated crisis management, on the themes of Water Quantity, Safety and Water Quality.

The workshop will take the experiences and expertise in the Netherlands as a starting point to jointly investigate:

  • commercial service opportunities (e.g. web apps),
  • diversity and applicability of existing solutions throughout Europe, and
  • commercial opportunities to assist developing countries to set-up their own sustainable water management systems.

There will also be the opportunity to bring forward activity ideas and discuss the possibilities for developing new services within the ESA IAP funding scheme. AP Water can support this process by bringing users, developers and service providers in water management together.

About AP Water

Het Waterschapshuis is the directing, managing and implementing organization for the joint ICT for Dutch water management players. Those players are a national organization and 25 regional water authorities that share the responsibility to clean waste water, meet the demand for water availability and make sure that we can safely live and work behind our dunes and dikes.

The objective of the AP Water Ambassador Platform, managed by Het Waterschapshuis, is to assist ESA's IAP program in spreading awareness among potential stakeholders (institutions, industry and users) on the theme of Water Management, in particular regarding

  • Quality - e.g. monitoring, forecasting and control of : salinity, pollutants, oxygen, e. coli (gastroenteritis); for raw water, treated water and sewage.
  • Quantity - e.g. water levels monitoring and control, raw and treated water availability and distribution, drainage design and maintenance, dealing with droughts.
  • Safety - e.g. dike and dam monitoring and maintenance; river restoration; flood forecasting, prevention, monitoring, mitigation.

You are invited to join our stakeholder group on LinkedIn. This group is intended as an open networking platform, e.g. for project idea discussions and to identify useful links between water management users,  IAP/APWater, as well as service providers and industry, leveraging on the existing LinkedIn connections many of us already have.
